THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION, Uncertain. Mid-late 5th century BC. AR Diobol (12mm, 1.47 g). Forepart of Pegasos right, displaying both wings / Incuse square with swastika-like pattern. CNG E-441, lot 34. Lightly toned, some porosity. VF. Possibly the second known.

The Pegasos forepart is a very common type on silver fractions in the 5th century BC. However, the thin fabric of the flan, and this peculiar form of incuse is quite uncommon, and discounts a possible attribution to Lampsakos. The closest parallel is found among the mid-late 5th century tritartemoria of Eion in Macedon, which has a very similar flan and incuse, as well as a dotted border around the obverse type (cf. HGC 5, 525). The weight of this piece is consistent with the Attic-Euboic standard used at some cities in the region (including Eion), so it may originate from a city (or tribe?) that fell under Athenian control after the Persians were expelled from the region.
