Emden at sea in the Indian Ocean, the Iron Cross above; DER DEUTSCHEN STOLZ, DER FEINDE SCHRECK ("The Pride of the Germans, the Terror of our Enemies") S.M.S. EMDEN 1914 below. Edge: SILBER 990. Zetzmann 4051. Prooflike Uncirculated; struck on polished plate; light marks; choice gray and blue toning with mirrored fields.

First World War, personal medal.The Emden had landed a raiding party on Direction Island in the Keeling Cocos Islands to destroy a radio mast, when HMS Sydney appeared and engaged von Müller, destroying the ship and capturing the surviving crew. The landing-party under von Mücke seized the Ayesha and escaped, eventually returning to Germany.
