Three great US Mint engravers in the 19th century, Anthony Paquet, Victor Brenner, and Charles Barber, were responsible for exceptional classics during their era. Brenner and Barber are remembered more generally because of their association with major series. But Paquet, who never became chief engraver at the Mint, designed the Congressional Medal of Honor (at Lincoln's behest), patterns for Seated Liberty coinage, the Paquet Reverse double eagle, as well as unsigned dies and extensive work during his years at the Mint.
