Galba. A.D. 68-69. AR denarius. 3.43 gm. 19 mm. Rome mint. Struck circa July 68 - January 69. His laureate head right; IMP SER GALBA CAESAR AVG / Livia, draped, standing left, holding patera and scepter; DIVA AVGVSTA. RIC I 186 (R). RSC 55. Very Fine; fresh surfaces with pleasing silver quality; attractive light iridescence with blue-red highlights in the peripheral obverse toning; small scrape on reverse edge at 10'. Well centered with a bold high-relief bust. Rare.

Ruling for just seven months during the Year of the Four Emperors (AD 68/9), Galba's authority rested primarily on military power and his control of Rome. He attempted to strengthen his position by showcasing his distant connection to Augustus and the Julio-Claudian dynasty, as on this coin where he features Livia, the wife of Augustus, to whom he was distantly related through his stepmother.
