M AYP ANTWNINOC•KAIC AΠΟΔA, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right, seen from behind / Caracalla standing facing in military dress, head left, patera in right hand, scepter in left; L ς (date) in left field. Alexandrian tetradrachms of Caracalla are rare, but this example also boasts an obverse legend unlisted in any of the standard references. The unusual AΠΟΔA apparently an abbreviated form of AΠΟΔAVTOK (Imperator Destinatus) - an equivalent found on the Rome mint denarius (RIC IV.I 6) for Caracalla during AD 196-198 with legend DESTINATO IMPERAT.
