Trajan (AD 98-117). AR Restoration Issue denarius (17mm, 6h) of C. Memmius. ANACS VF 20. Rome, AD 107, restoring type of C. Memmius C.f. (ca. 56 BC). QVIRINVS-C•MEMMI•C•F•, laureate head of Quirinus right / IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GER DAC P P REST / MEMMIVS•AED•CERIALIA•PREIMVS•FECIT, Trajan legend surrounding original legend around Ceres seated right, torch in left hand, corn ears in right; serpent right at her feet. RIC II 799 restoring issue of Crawford 427/2. Sydenham 921. RSC Memmia 9.

From the Morris Collection.

The restoration issues of Trajan (AD 98-117) had the dual purpose of introducing a new, slightly lighter monetary standard for both the gold and silver coinage, through recalling earlier aurei and denarii, and replacing both with regular issues of Trajan and "restored" examples of the coins being replaced to link his regime to the virtues of the Republic and previous deified (and successful) emperors, Vespasian among them. These restoration issues were struck only in token numbers and remain extremely rare today.
