Divus Pertinax (AD 193). AR denarius (18mm, 2.24 gm, 12h). NGC VF 4/5 - 4/5. Rome, AD 193-194. DIVVS PERT-PIVS PATER, bare head of Divus Pertinax right / CONSECRATIO, eagle standing right on globe, head left. RIC IV.I (Septimius Severus) 24A.
From the Morris Collection
The short-reigning Emperor Pertinax (January-March AD 193) was deified on the orders of his eventual successor Septimius Severus, who then briefly added Pertinax to his own name and titles. Pertinax had favored Severus throughout the younger man's career and Severus portrayed his usurpation of the throne as a retribution campaign against the murderers of Pertinax.
