ANCIENT LOTS. Roman Mixed. Lot of 13 various Roman issues - contorniate, medallions, denarii, lead tokens. Includes the following:
1: Nero (AD 54-68). AD mid-4th-early 5th centuries. AE contorniate (37mm, 20.62 gm). VF, die shift. NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P, laureate head of Nero right; incuse palm in right field / reverse blank.
2: Trajan (AD 98-117). AR restoration issue denarius (20mm, 3.27 gm, 7h). XF. Moneyer L. Lucretius Trio (ca. 74 BC). Rome, AD 107. No legend, radiate head of Sol right / IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GER DAC P P REST, TRIO / L•LVCRETI, crescent moon surrounded by seven stars. RIC II 785. Ex L. Vierordt Collection (Schulman 139, 4-8 March 1923).
3: Trajan (AD 98-117). AR restoration issue denarius (20mm, 2.79 gm, 8h). XF. Moneyer L. Valerius Acisculus (ca. 45 BC). Rome, AD 107. ACISCVLVS, head of Apollo Soranus right, lightly bearded, hair in parallel corkscrew curls and held in taenia; dolabra (pickaxe) to left, star above forehead, dotted border / IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GER DAC P P REST, Europa or Valeria Luperca riding bull right, holding her billowing veil above with both hands; L•VALERIVS in exergue. Ex Niggeler Collection (M&M-Leu, November 1967); Hall Collection.
4: Hadrian (117-138 AD). Framed sestertius-sized medallion in orichalcum (53mm, 83.50 gm). About VF, porosity. Rome, ca. AD 123-128. HADRIANVS-AVGVSTVS, laureate bust of Hadrian right, slight drapery on left shoulder / COS III, eagle standing left, head right, on thunderbolt, between owl perched right on shield and peacock in splendor, standing left on scepter. Gnecchi 64 (three specimens, none framed). Cohen 431 (not framed, 100 Fr.). Apparently this is the only time this medallion has been encountered in a frame of this type. The three birds represent the Capitoline Triad; Jupiter (eagle), Juno (peacock), and Minerva (owl). Bronze medallions, introduced under Trajan, were at first struck only on ordinary sestertius and middle-bronze flans. This example has been made from sestertius-size dies, however, the oversized flan is formed of a single piece of orichalcum. The frame is not a separate piece added later to a medallion struck in sestertius size, as on later bi-metallic issues. The frame is marked with two circular grooves - an inner one enclosing the types and an outer one near the edge, as on the later contorniates; and the edge decorated with two further circular grooves. One other example (46mm, 76.00 gm) found in sales archives - Gemini III (9 January 2007), lot 368, realized $9000.
5: Marcus Aurelius, as Caesar (AD 161-180). AE medallion (44mm, 65.70 gm, 11h). About VF. Rome, AD 159-160. AVRELIVS CAE-SAR AVG PII FIL, bare headed, draped bust of Marcus Aurelius right, seen from front / TR POT XIIII COS II, Hercules (on right) standing left, leaning with right arm on grounded club, facing Salus (on left) seated right, feeding snake in right hand; tripod and tree in center. Apparently a unique reverse type, although Gnecchi 147 (Antoninus Pius) has a reverse type with Salus alone feeding a serpent coiled around a similar tree.
6: Marcus Aurelius, as Augustus (AD 161-180). AE medallion (39mm, 42.85 gm, 11h). VF. Rome, AD 178. M AVREL ANTONINVS AVG-GERM SARM TR P XXXII, laureate, cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius right, seen from front / IMP VIIII-COS III-P P / VOTA PVBLICA, emperor, togate, sacrificing from patera in right hand over altar to left; victimarius preparing to sacrifice bull standing right at far left, citizen, tibicen playing tibia, and child at left standing right, four citizens to right, highly decorated hexastyle temple in background. This is the companion medallion to Gnecchi 166 (Commodus) of the same year.
7: Faustina Junior (AD 147-175/6). AE medallion (39mm, 47.09 gm, 11h). Fine, tooled. Rome. FAVSTINA AVG-PII AVG FIL, draped bust of Faustina Junior left, seen from front, hair waved and coiled at back of head in chignon / S-C, Cybele seated facing, head left, flanked by standing lions facing inward, tree to left with hanging cymbals. 11: Roman Republic? Anonymous. Lead token (18mm, 3.66 gm, 7h). Fine. Ulysses walking right, staff in left hand, sack in right / Dog standing right. Apparently inspired by Roman Republic denarius of C. Mamilius Limetanus (82 BC) - Mamilia 6.
12: Roman Provincial? Egypt. Alexandria. Lead token (21mm, 4.66 gm, 9h). Good. Bust right / animal leaping right.
13: Roman Provincial? Egypt. Alexandria. Lead token (12mm, 1.22 gm, 12h). VG. Bucranium facing / Bucranium facing.
Although all of these items appear to be original, ancient items as listed in each description, it is possible some could be Paduan or later imitations.
