Lead seal of Katakalon (ca 11th cent.), Obverse: The bust of saint Nicholas en face, nimbate, wearing bishop garments and omophorion, holding in his left hand the book of the Gospels, his right hand raised in blessing gesture. Columnar inscription in either side: + Ο (ΑΓΙΟC)/ ΝΙΚΟΛΑ(ΟC) (Saint Nicholaos).
Reverse: Inscription in 5 lines: + ΑΓΙΕ/ ΝΙΚΟΛΑΕ/ Β(ΟΗ)Θ(ΕΙ) ΤΩ CΩ Δ(ΟΥΛΩ)/ ΚΑΤΑΚ(Α)/ Λ(ΩΝ) (+ Saint Nicholas, help your servant Katakalon).
Katakalon (Greek: Κατακαλών) was the name of a Byzantine noble family of the 10th–12th centuries. After the 12th century, the family descended into obscurity. Cf.
