Lead seal of Nicholaos protospatharios, kandidatos and episkopites(?) (11th/12th cent.) A nice example of an overstruck seal! Diam.: mm Weight: gr. Condition: About VF. Brown natural patina.
Obverse: The bust of St. Nicholaos, en face, blessing and holding the book of
Gospels, within dotted border. Columnar inscription: Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΝΙ/ΚΟΛ(ΑΟΣ) (Saint
Nicholaos).
Reverse: Inscription in 5 lines, within dotted border: + ΝΙΚΟΛΑΩ
(ΠΡΩΤΟ)CΠΑΘ(Α)Ρ(ΙΩ), ΚΑΝΔ(Ι)Δ(ΑΤΩ) ΚΑΙ ΕΠΙCΚΟΠΙΤΗ(?) (+Nicholaos
protospatharios, kandidatos and episkopite(?)).
Note: On the obverse one can observe traces of the previous sealing (a circular
inscription).
