VESPASIAN, A.D. 69-79. AE Sestertius (27.86 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 71. NGC VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5.
RIC-58 (R2; this coin illustrated); Hendin-1496 var. (bust type). "Judaea Capta" commemorative. Obverse: Laureate bust right, wearing aegis; Reverse: Victory standing right, with foot set upon helmet, inscribing shield OB/CIV/SERV set upon palm tree to right. Though exhibiting some pitting and rough spots, more noticeably on the reverse, this piece remains an important and well struck example on a full flan. Rated in the recent RIC as an R2, this cataloger could locate no other examples having sold in the past two decades. The plate coin for this type in RIC is actually a cast from Oxford University's Ashmolean Museum collection, the original (our present example) having had the cast taken while it was part of the Hall Collection, sold by Glendining in 1950. Of the highest interest to the advanced collector of sestertii or Judaea Capta issues.
