JOHN VIII, 1423-1448. AR Half Stavraton (3.35 gms), Constantinople Mint. NGC Ch EF★, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5.
S-2565. Obverse: Facing bust of Christ Pantokrator; Reverse: Facing bust of John. This silver series of stavrata and their fractions represents some of the final coinage struck at Constantinople before her fall to the Ottomans. Incredibly crude in terms of both dies and striking, these coins are never encountered as attractive as the present example, which features an alluring cabinet tone, some underlying luster, and a remarkably sharp strike--indicative of its well deserved star designation.
Estimate: $500.00- $750.00
