BELGIUM. Silver Fantasy 5 Francs Pattern, 1815-A. Paris Mint. NGC MS-63.
Maz-750. According to Jean Mazard, author of Histoire Monetaire et Numismatique Contemporaine published 1965, although these "Patterns" are typically included with the French engraving contest of 1815-17 for proposed designs of the new coinage, these were struck at the Brussels mint at a much later date. Although the design is strongly reminiscent of the five francs of Louis XVIII, Philippe D'Auvergne (1754-1816) was an admiral in the British Navy with no connection to the French royal family. Well struck as would be expected with lovely rich patina displaying attractive slate grey tone with light iridescent hues.
Estimate: $800.00- $1000.00
