BOLIVIA. La Plata (City). Ferdinand VII Gold Proclamation Medallic 8 Escudos, 1808. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED DETAILS.
26.99 gms. Medina-311; cf. Herrera-26 (Unlisted in Gold). By Alferaz Real Domingode Anibarro. Obverse: Crowned rampant lion holds castle over prostrate double eagle whose crown rolls away, titles of the new King form the legend; Reverse: Arms of city, imperial eagle with twin peaks and pillars, castles and five severed heads below. Coarse diagonal reeding. An EXTREMELY RARE striking of this beautifully engraved proclamation piece in 8 Escudos weight. Retaining an exceptional appearance, both sides display intense reflective gleam in the fields, while the raised designs, although not entirely full in places, leave no major detail to the imagination. Vivid orange tone on both sides only adds to the appearance. It is only upon intense examination that one discovers a now-filled hole near 12 o'clock where this piece would have been suspended to a necklace; a common occurrence for these deeply personal, highly intrinsic creations. In fact, the repair borders on masterful, with a number of the once-effected designs having been re-engraved in believable fashion after the hole was plugged. Considering both its rarity and overall sublime appearance, these shortcomings are honestly easy to dismiss. As such, this marks a noteworthy occasion for the specialist that covets fine Latin American treasures.
