BRAZIL. 640 Reis, 1816-B. Bahia Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield.
KM-246.1; LDMB-P394; Gomes-JR27.08. Struck over 1756-R "J" Series 600 Reis with previous Shield countermark of 1809 (undertype with countermark is KM-300), shown on the obverse in the central design. A very rare date with an EXTREMELY RARE host coin having the previous shield countermark. The most recent record we were able to locate for this date/mint was an NGC-AU 58 in the Heritage September 2012 Long Beach auction Lot # 23244 where it hammered down for an impressive $37,500-. This date/mint is considered by most Brazilian academics to be one of the rarest silver issues from the entire series. The opportunity acquire such a rarity does not present itself often and as such we expect to see spirited bidding from the specialist or highly advanced collector. Exhibiting a nice solid strike nearly obliterating all but traces of the undertype with lovely soft mottled metallic gray to blue toning. A fantastic representative of the type destine for a fine cabinet.

With old collector's envelope.

Estimate: $15000.00- $20000.00
