FRANCE. Provence. Franc a Pied, ND (ca. 1343-52). Joanna of Naples. NGC MS-64.
3.77 gms. Fr-208; Dup-1679. Obverse: Royal figure, holding sword and lis-tipped scepter, standing facing within Gothic portico surrounded by lis; Reverse: Cross fleurée within polylobe. A rather lustrous near gem, exhibiting some typical striking weakness in a few spots. Compare to the Garrett specimen, an NGC MS-63, which realized a hammer of $2,750 in 2016.

The county of Provence, home of the Provençal dialect spoken throughout southern France, was ruled by a separate dynasty until 1486 when it was finally incorporated into France. Joanna of Naples (ca. 1326-82) was queen of Naples, countess of Provence, and princess of Achaea.
