GERMANY. Silesia. Uniface Klippe 3 Taler, 1621. Glogau Mint (Poland). Ferdinand II. NGC MS-63.
Mailliet plate cii, 5; KM-24. Siege Coinage issue. Struck by Protestant rebels during the 30 Years' War using 3/4 Taler dies. While only scarce as a type, this example is without question the most attractive survivor we have seen. All three stamps (the central circular stamp + the two tiny stamps above and below) were forcefully applied, thus transferring all the intended details from the punches into the surfaces of the flan. Additionally, few instances of handling are seen, with the uniface reverse, which is especially prone to contact, remaining impressively smooth. Most important to the appearance however is the dramatic blue, green and mauve tone that appears in the stamp recesses and illuminates the appearance. Because of this unmatched character, we expect strong competition for the right to own both history and beauty combined into one item.

From the Linda Collection.
