GREAT BRITAIN. Noble, ND (1422-30). London Mint. Henry VI (first reign). PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield.
6.95 gms, 107.1 grains (Law Sale Catalog). S-1799; North-1414; Fr-112. Second Annulet issue. Mintmark: Lis. Obverse: King standing on ship, holding sword and shield. Reverse: 'H' at center of cross; alternating crowns and lis within eight arches. The exceptional quality and rarity of the Thomas Law sale hammered English gold coins will prove to be a benchmark American coin auction of this subject. Not only were the rarest types featured, such as broad Henry VII Sovereigns of four mintmarks, but often duplicates used for reverse display purposes were in the collection surpassing the quality of his primary example. This Henry VI duplicate from the Law Collection is a gorgeous example. As described then, it is struck on a well-made and nearly round flan. Clear and sharp in all respects, it was conservatively graded then. It is lustrous and pleasing in all respects. The exemplary pedigree adds to its desirability.

From the Downing Collection.
