GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1645-46). London Mint. Charles I. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield.
29.82 gms. S-2761; N-2198. Mintmark: Sun/Sun (1645-1646). Type 4. FRC XXV/XXXIII. Fourth Obverse: King on compact horse without caparisons facing left, sword upright in hand; Reverse: Oval garnished shield. This is a splendid representative of this major type from the Tower Mint under Parliament. The Charles I crowns were collected with zeal by Michael S. Tallent and he had three die combinations for this particular type. This is the finest looking of his three and its PCGS designation confirms this. It is perfectly round, on excellent metal, and has even striking; exhibiting extremely sharp legends and enough details in the obverse center to make it handsome overall. A rare die pairing combination missing from several major Charles I laden sales (Lingford and Van Roekel for example). Originally described as "Very Fine" in the important Tallent Collection sold by us in 2008 where it realized $2,530.

From the Downing Collection.
