GREAT BRITAIN. Silver Crown Pattern, 1817. London Mint. George III. NGC PROOF-64.
KM-PnB77, L&S-152, ESC-2020 (R2; formerly ESC-223). Plain edge. By William Wyon. Obverse: GEORGIUS III D: G: BRITANNIARUM REX F: D:, laureate head right; Reverse: FOEDUS INVIOLABILE (our unbreakable bond), the Three Graces (as allegorical representations of Ireland, England, and Scotland), standing and embracing one another, their attributes (harp, Union shield, and thistle, respectively), at their feet; torch and palm frond crossed in saltire in exergue.

Absolutely stunning, this is arguably the most graceful and appealing Crown Pattern ever produced by Wyon or, for that matter, the Royal Mint in general. Exhibiting highly reflective fields that contrast beautifully with lightly textured devices, the surfaces are further enhanced by an iridescence engulfed in a deep and alluring cabinet tone. An intensely remarkable specimen, and the first of this type that we have had the privilege to offer at auction, this piece is reported by the authors of English Silver Coinage to have a mintage of just 50 specimens, few of which can equal the majesty of this tour de force. We extend our congratulations in advance to the fortunate winner of this singular offering, without doubt destined to become the centerpiece of a most advanced collection of British Crowns.

Estimate: $130000.00- $170000.00
