GREAT BRITAIN. Winchester College Gold Prize Medal, 1846. Victoria. UNCIRCULATED DETAILS.
49 mm; 58.24 gms. Eimer-1240 var. By. B. Wyon. Obverse: Youthful bust of Victoria left; Reverse: Tomb of William of Wykeham at Winchester; Edge (inscribed): EDVARDUS D. HOLROYD. COMMENSALIS. MDCCCXLVI. A reflective medal that was struck in impressive relief with deeply frosted designs and fancy machined rims. Worthy of note is a slight wave in the planchet that is likely attributable to the implement that held the medal in place during the inscription process as well as a few short scratches that are seen near the obverse edge at 4 o'clock. VERY RARE in gold.

Edward Dundas Holroyd (1828-1916), after his graduation from Winchester College, pursued a career in law. He entered Gray's Inn (a law society) in November 1851 and was admitted to the bar in June of 1855. Later, he immigrated to Australia where he was admitted into the Victorian Bar in 1859 and the Tasmanian Bar eight years later in 1867. While living in Australia, he played an important role in constitutional adoption within the Supreme Court as well as Victoria's Judicature Act under which common law and equity were combined. His contributions didn't go unnoticed, as he earned knighthood and the title Sir Edward Dundas Holroyd in 1903 before he would finally retire in 1906.

Estimate: $2000.00- $4000.00
