The Royal Greenland Trading Department (Company) was established in 1774 by the Danes with the mission of administrating the realm's settlements and trade with Greenland. For significant periods, the company held monopolies on all local trade, with whaling and fishing being the primary industry. Until 1908, the government was also under the company's management. Finally, in 1950, the monopoly ended, and the two regional splits (northern and southern) that the company had made were dissolved in preparation for the integration into the Kingdom of Denmark in 1953.
