ITALY. Achaia. Zecchino, ND (1346-64). Roberto d'Angio-Tarente. PCGS MS-65.
Fr-38a. Imitation of a Venetian Ducat of Andrea Dandolo. Stunning quality for this often-crude type, featuring a strike that has left the design well-centered and with crisp and even detail in centers as well as the peripheries. Close inspection confirms the Gem designation assigned by PCGS, with undiminished sparkling luster that resides in the fields and nary a mark that one can point to. Considering the design similarity to its Venetian counterparts, this coin would make a wonderful and logical parallel-piece for the collector endeavoring to assemble a collection of Venetian Ducats for every known doge.
The principality of Achaia, founded by Frankish adventurers after the Fourth Crusade, ruled most of the Greek Peloponnese during the late Middle Ages.
