RUSSIA. Crimean Annexation Silver Medal, 1783. By V. Baranov and G. C. Waechter. Prince Grigory Aleksandrovich Potemkin-Tauricheski, Generalfeldmarschall. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
92 mm. Diakov-197.3 (R3). Commemorating the annexation of Crimean and the Taman Peninsulas. Obverse: Ornately armored and draped bust right; Reverse: Outline of mostly the Crimean Peninsula, with a small part of the Taman Peninsula to right; various towns highlighted throughout. An incredibly RARE and majestic medal in silver, this near choice piece features an alluring cabinet tone along with some underlying luster. Though some versions in bronze were found, this cataloger could locate no other examples in silver, making this a must for the advanced collector of rare Russian medallic art.

Grigory Potemkin, an ennobled Russian military leader and favourite of Catherine II 'the Great,' oversaw the successful campaign in 1783 to peacefully annex the Crimea---a strip of land ever-important to Russia due to the access which it allows to the Black Sea and thus, eventually, the Mediterranean. This region would continue to be a source of great concern to Russia, as it was the focal point of the Crimean War from 1853-1856 as well as the recent disputed annexation in 2014 away from Ukraine.

Estimate: $8000.00- $12000.00
