SOUTH AFRICA. Gold Award Medal, 1885. Republic. PCGS SPECIMEN-63 Gold Shield.
55.78 gms. Awarded and engraved to Howard, Farrar & Co. Issued for the South African Exhibition held in Port Elizabeth. By A. Fischer & Co. Obverse: Hope, resting hand upon anchor, standing right and leading settlers toward the Temple of Learning in background to left; Reverse: In tablet: AWARDED TO "HOWARD FARRAR & Co / PORT ELIZABETH / FOR THEIR SIMPLEX / WINDMILL;" four genii around; all within wreath. Edge: Plain. Exquisitely lustrous and enchanting, this rather large award features tremendous relief on the obverse. Though unmarked with a fineness, a 90% purity would place this piece at well over one-and-a-half ounces of gold.

The firm of Howard, Farrer & Co. was an engineering enterprise established by Sir Frederick Howard in Port Elizabeth and East London. In 1885, they were awarded this gold medal for their simplex windmill. The following description is from Class 59, the 'Report on machinery specially adapted to South African wants--for water raising, and other purposes,' and is the jury's analysis for why this firm was the recipient of the award. It is taken from The South African Exhibition, Port Elizabeth, 1885; Lectures Prize and other Essays, Jury Reports and Awards, p. 438:

"Amongst the water-raising appliances, Windmills occupy a prominent position, and after carefully examining into the various features of those shown we consider the "Simplex" windmill of Messrs. Howard, Farrar & Co. to be the best on account of the superior arrangement of the wind vanes, and also of the ease with which renewals or repairs may be effected. We award a gold medal to the "Simplex" windmill as the best."

Estimate: $2500.00- $3500.00
