SPAIN. Platinum Contemporary Counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1786-M DV. Imitating Madrid Mint. Charles III. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.
27.06 gms. Cf. KM-409.1a (for prototype); cf. Fr-284 (same). A nineteenth century counterfeit struck in platinum and then gold plated. Some light rub and a good deal of brilliance. A highly interesting piece. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS.

Made in a period when platinum was enough cheaper than gold to make it worth the trouble. Numerous other Spanish and French gold coins were similarly faked, suggesting a sophisticated operation with high political protection.

Estimate: $1800.00- $2400.00
