TURKEY. Ottoman Empire. Battle of Sinope Bronze Medal, 1853. Abdul Medjid. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield.
Pere-1103. Diameter: 68.2 mm. Obverse: Bust of Abdul Medjid (1839-61) facing, legend "ABDUL-MEDJID-KHAN EMPEREUR DES OTTOMANS" around; Reverse: Robed female places wreath on altar commemorating Turkish losses at Sinope, legend "EUROPE ILS SONT MORTS POUR TOI" above, and in exergue "SINOPE/ 1853". An impressive and finely detailed design with deeply concave fields on both sides and a smooth, dark brown patina.

When the Ottoman fleet was destroyed by the Russians at Sinope, Britain and France joined with the Turks to prevent a massive Russian expansion into the Middle East.
