ARGENTINA. Buenos Aires. St. Andrew's School Silver Medal, 1885. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.
42 mm / 21.85 gms. Obverse: "ST ANDREWS SCOTCH SCHOOL/BUENOS AYRES", St. Andrew holding cross above and date below, three countermarks of Queen Victoria, the initials "H&I", and the Scottish thistle on the bottom; Reverse: Four-line inscription with St. Andrew holding cross above. Engraved to commend a John Kyle for merits in Spanish at the St. Andrew's Scots School located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The only example we have seen. Preserved with a bright, mirror-like surface set in an ornate floral bezel. Attractive in hand, with just a few light hairlines that are well hidden beneath the gold and bronze patina.

This medal provides a unique window into the lives of immigrants from the British Isles who settled in South America in the late 19th Century. They established schools and churches and lived in close-knit communities. The legacy of their identity is still visible today in the landmarks and common last names.

Estimate: $100.00- $300.00
