AUSTRIAN NETHERLANDS. Batavian Republic. Silver Ducat, 1805. Utrecht Mint. NGC MS-63.
Dav-225; KM-25. Lustrous and lightly toned, free of hairlines and other defects except for a tiny planchet flaw in "CONCORDIA" on the reverse.

The Batavian Republic was a state formed out of the wreckage of the old Dutch United Provinces in 1795. Always French dominated but never truly a puppet state, its profitable embrace of smuggling annoyed Napoleon so much that he installed his brother Louis as king of Holland in 1806, to no avail. This type is frequently catalogued as a rijksdaalder but is indistinguishable in design or size from the silver ducat struck under the United Provinces.

Estimate: $500.00- $700.00
