GREAT BRITAIN. Middlesex. Spence's Farthing Token, ND (1790s). PCGS MS-64 Brown Gold Shield.
D&H-1105. Spence's. Obverse: a man hanging from a gibbet; reverse: "MAY THE KNAVE OF JACOBIN CLUBS NEVER GET A TRICK". Lustrous with traces of mint red, a die break on each side. There are thousands of Conder token varieties, some of which with American motifs are listed in the Red Book. Tokens such as the present one, another piece of Spence mischief, are excellent examples of fascinating numismatic items being available for modest prices. A Talbot, Allum & Lee token, also part of the Conder series, is dozens of times more available than this token and would sell for well over $1,000. Interesting to contemplate.
From the Q. David Bowers Collection.
Estimate: $200.00- $300.00
