GREAT BRITAIN. Cast Iron Lusitania Medal, 1915. UNCIRCULATED.
Burns-4b; cf. Eimer-1941Ab (for British copy); cf. Kienast-156 (for prototype). American copy. Issued by Sandstrom & Mahood, after Goetz. Obverse: The Lusitania sinking in heavy seas; legend in five lines in exergue / GESCHAFT UBER ALLES (business above all), Death (as a skeleton) standing left within ticket booth marked CUNA[RD]/LINIE and CUNARD (the Cunard Line, owners of the ship) above and to right, and FAHRKARTEN/AUSGABE (ticket office) below; to left, queue of passengers, one of whom reads a newspaper with the headline U/BOO[T]/GEFAH[R] (U-Boat danger). Edge: Plain. Essentially as made, though a light casting flaw on the edge at 2 is noted. A popular reissue of the original Goetz medal, made for and sold to an American audience in order to raise funds for charity. Includes box of issue, though somewhat torn.
