BRITISH NORTH BORNEO. Labuk Planting Company Limited Copper 20 Cents Token, ND (ca. 1924). PCGS PROOF-65 Red Brown Gold Shield.
Prid-41; LaWe-673. Struck for use on plantations within the territory which employed at least 100 laborers. The token coinage of British North Borneo was originally issued by the plantations themselves, but eventually became subject to regulation by Great Britain after widespread abuse. Beginning in 1920, plantations were required to withdraw from circulation 20 percent of the outstanding circulating token coinage by December 31st of each year, with the token coinage withdrawn in its entirety on December 31, 1924. Hence, there are few surviving examples today. A nicely struck piece with abundant mint red in the fields.
Estimate: $600.00- $800.00
