Obverse: Bust of King Sisowath Monivong left within circular border, legend around; Reverse: Royal seal in relief, Khmer legend around of his full regnal title "Preah Bat Samdach Preah Serei Monivarman Krom Luang Chao Chakarbangsa Sisowath Monivong Nai Preah Reacheanachak Kampuchea" (His majesty, glorious lord scholar-protector; His highness, lord of land and sea, Sisowath Monivong of the Kingdom of Kampuchea). Edge (Hallmark Stamp): 18K. VERY RARE as a type and seemingly conservatively graded, with nearly flawless matte texture over the surfaces and a faint trace of complimentary reddish coloration that has nestled around the protected surfaces. Sold with the original the case of issue.
Sisowath Monivong like his father and uncle was more of a figurehead for the French administration rather than an independent ruler. In the 1930s, Communism became popular in Cambodia with the parties intent to overthrow the French administration. The invasion and subsequent occupation by the Japanese in early 1941 led to the Kings retirement to Kampot in late 1941. He died at Bokor the same year. He was give the posthumous title "Preah Karuna Preah Sisowath Monivong Preah Khatiyakot".
