JAPAN. Yonezawa. Bakumatsu 100 Mon & 200 Mon (2 Pieces), ND (1862-63). Average Grade: FINE.
Both are made from lead and exhibit many edge bumps, nicks and abrasions. Each piece displays a deep charcoal patina. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. An interesting aspect of Japanese numismatics sure to excite the specialist.

1) Hosokura. 100 Mon. ND (1863). JNDA-17.

2) Seisakkyoku. 200 Mon. ND (1862). JNDA-13; KM-80.

These pieces are examples of local issues made during the Bakumatsu period that were meant to provide a solution to the loss of gold coinage to foreign trade. The lead was produced in a mining district of the Rikuchu Province.
