SICILY. Syracuse. Ca. 415-405 BC. AR tetradrachm (26mm, 17.16 gm, 12h), NGC XF 4/5 - 3/5, marks. Reverse die (which is the obverse position in the holder) signed by Phrygillos, c. 415-405. Charioteer driving galloping chariot left, kentron in right hand, reins in left; Nike flying right above to crown the driver, grain ear left in exergue / ΣVPAKOΣION, head of Arethusa left, hair in saccos, wearing an ampyx inscribed with ΦYP (sic), four dolphins swimming around. Rizzo, pl. XLIII, 13. SNG ANS 278. Tudeer 53. A curious example with the die engravers signature spelled incorrectly. On each clear die that this cataloger could find, the signature correctly reads ΦPY. This example is incorrectly engraved ΦYP.
