Ancients
CILICIA. Uncertain mint. Ca. late 5th century BC. AR stater (20mm, 10.76 gm, 6h). NGC XF★ 5/5 - 4/5, edge cut. Heracles standing right, nude but for lion skin draped over left arm, holding fallen enemy by the helmet with left hand and preparing to strike with club in right / Bull standing right within dotted square frame; all in incuse square. Unpublished in the standard references. Likely the finest example of the about five pieces known.
Despite the high level of preservation and excellent strike, it is not entirely evident what the diagonal object with perpendicular intersection in the background is meant to represent. Perhaps the obverse is an illustration of Heracles' 9th Labor in the Battle against the Amazons for Hippolyte's belt and is somehow related? The object appears on all of the pieces in sales archives and perhaps was a flaw in the metal before engraving.
