Hadrian (AD 117-138). AV aureus (20mm, 7.11 gm, 5h). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 2/5, Fine Style, graffito. Rome, AD 125-128. HADRIANVS-AVGVSTVS, laureate bust of Hadrian right, slight drapery on far shoulder / C-OS-II-I, Hadrian on horseback galloping to right, couched lance in right hand, cloak billowing behind. RIC II 187d. BMCRE 437. Calicó 1224a.

Although his reign was largely peaceful, Hadrian took great care to maintain the Roman military machine in a high state of readiness. His extensive touring of the Empire's frontier provinces can be seen in military terms as enforcing his policy of peace through strength. He took a special interest in the cavalry, a role usually handled by native auxiliaries. An inscription found at the site of a fortress in Lambaesis, North Africa, records Hadrian's praise for the Pannonian cavalry unit stationed there: "You did everything according to the book. You filled the training ground with your wheelings, you threw spears not ungracefully."
