Ancients
Maurice Tiberius (AD 582-602). AV lightweight solidus of 20 siliquae (21mm, 2.96 gm, 7h). NGC MS, bent. Sicily or Constantine in Numidia, Regnal Year or Indictional Year 5 (AD 586/7 or 601/2). D N mAVRC-TIb PP AVS, pearl-diademed, helmeted, draped, and cuirassed bust of Maurice Tiberius facing, helmet topped by crest, globus cruciger in right hand / VICTORI-A AVCC Є, Angel standing facing, long staff terminating in staurogram in right hand, globus cruciger in left; CONOB in exergue. Sear 573 (Constantine in Numidia). DO 257. MIB 28 (Sicily). Note - Sear lists two solidi for the uncertain mint of Constantine in Numidia, with 573 as regular weight (CONOB) and 574, a light weight solidus of 20 siliquae (CONXX). This coin appears to be a hybrid of dies of Sear 573 on a flan meant for 574, as the four examples of 573 in sales archives are regular weight (4-4.5 gm), with the three examples of 573 in the 20-siliquae range (2.99-3.34 gm). Intriguing!
