Armenia
Cilician Armeria. Levon I (1198-1219) Denier ND (c. 1208) XF Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, Sis mint, CCS-134, Bed-12. 0.86gm. + ARMENOR, crowned head facing / +LEO REX, cross pattée. An extremely rare Armenian issue, of a particular type supposedly absent from the auction record for two decades. Clearly struck in concordance with the Antiochene rather than the Armenian standard, it has been supposed that this type was produced by Levon in anticipation of his capture of Antioch, at which he had nearly succeeded in 1203. Very bold and precise for this series, with a strong portrait of Levon and only mild ghosting of the reverse cross; surfaces of a uniform matte gunmetal color with evidence of lightly altered surfaces, yet still bearing sharp die-polish lines.
