João Prince Regent silver Proof Pattern 960 Reis 1809-R PR62 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM-Pn8, Bentes-E2.01, LMB-E012. With the transfer of the Portuguese Crown to Brazil in 1808, an act was passed to enable a monetary authority in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Bahia to buy Hispanic 8 Reales and other foreign crowns of similar size and strike 960 Reis. Seven Patterns were made, with slight variations of metal and design. The piece presented here, the smooth rim silver Pattern, remains the most elusive of all. The offering exhibits needle-sharp detail and reflective mirror surfaces unveiling hints of iridescence. This is only the second example of the type we have offered, the last uncertified and selling in 2013 (Auction 3021, Lot 20155) for $30,550 including Buyer's Premium.
