Ethiopia
Zauditu gold Pattern Werk (1/8 Birr) EE 1917 (1925) MS62 NGC, Addis Ababa mint, Gill-YA21A. Obv. Crowned, veiled, and draped bust left. Rev. Crowned Lion of Judah left, head facing, cradling cruciform staff with banner in raised forepaw; full legend below. A fascinating example of this decidedly rare Pattern, preserved in its full Mint State glory, a strong golden shimmer present in the fields. Gill notes that the reverse was struck from dies intended for a Menelik silver 1/8 Birr of the series (Y-18-20) but actually was used for only the Y-17 1 Besa. The first of this denomination that we have encountered, and an invaluable prize for the advanced collector of the Ethiopian series.
