Haile Selassie I Mint Error - Close Overlap - Double-Strike Reverse gold Specimen Pattern Werk EE 1921 (1928) SP63 PCGS, Addis Ababa mint, KM-Pn8, Gill-RT8. Plain edge. This very rare type is a gold off-metal Pattern, struck from the obverse die made for a Pattern silver 1/8 Birr and the reverse die used for the Menelik 1/32 Birr. According to Gill, the weight of the type varies from between 4.18gm and 8.35gm according to the thickness of the planchet. Since the weight is not on the holder we cannot verify this fact, but the offering was previously sold with a stated weight of 9.09gms, which would place this coin above Gill's range, very much on the heavy end. Gill also notes that all of the pieces appear to be struck from rusty dies, leaving the coins with "small raised pimples or blotches", a feature also seen with the offering at hand. A heavily doubled reverse strike further heightens the interest engendered by this already intriguing presentation issue.
