Carolingian. Charlemagne (768-814) Denier ND (771-793) AU Details (Damaged) NGC (photo-certificate), Limoges mint, Class 2, Rob-884, MEC I-725, MG-260, Dep-502, Kluge-108. 17mm. 1.09gm. CARo | LVS in two lines (AR ligate) across field / LEM, mark of contraction above (cross between two pellets below). A very rare pre-reform issue that seldom becomes available at all. Despite some clear edge chipping--which from the coloration, appears contemporaneous to the coin's time in circulation--the strike is quite nice for the type, free of flatness or ghosting with a respectable relief to the letters.
