Aquitaine. Edward III gold Leopard d'Or ND (1325-1377) MS61 NGC, Bordeaux mint, Dup-1051A, Elias-38a (RR), W&F-43B 1/a (R3). 29mm. Variety with quatrefoils in obverse spandrels. +ЄDVVARDVS‡ DЄI‡ GRA‡ AnGLIЄ‡ FRAnCIЄ‡ RЄX, crowned leopard passant within tressure, tail curved with three large tufts, within tressure; quatrefoils in spandrels / +XP(crescent)C‡ VInCIT‡ XP(crescent)C‡ RЄGИAT‡ XP(crescent)C‡ IMPЄRAT, cross fleury with ornate central rosette within angled quatrilobe, leopards passants in angles, voided quatrefoils in spandrels. Lombardic A's in legends. Second Issue (from July 1356). A considerably rarer early emission of this already highly coveted type by collectors, positively gorgeous in all elements of the design with a level of refinement, and lack of waviness, hardly ever encountered in this Anglo-Gallic gold series. Easily among the finest certified, and a true prize for its prospective new owner.
