German States
Bavaria. Maximilian I gold 5 Ducat 1640 AU Details (Removed From Jewelry, Graffiti) NGC, Munich mint, KM268, Fr-196. 17.37gm. Variety with date above. Commemorating the completion of new fortifications around Munich. Obv. Maximilian standing slightly right, fully clad in armor, holding scepter and resting hand upon orb set upon altar to right; all within ornate hallway. Rev. Veduta of Munich within the fortifications; above, the Madonna seated facing among the clouds, holding Holy Infant and scepter; cherub to left and right. Showing only light wear to the higher points, with evidence of both the noted cleaning as well as the reverse graffiti over the right section of the city view fading into much greater obscurity than might otherwise be expected, a consequence of the satiny and textured surfaces of the type, as it was struck. A more affordable representative of this type which remains ever-popular for its dramatic size and imagery!
