Wilhelm I nickel Specimen Trial Strike Pattern Mark 1880-A SP66 PCGS, Berlin mint, cf. KM7 (for type), Schaaf-Unl. Incredibly rare and perhaps unique, this is the only example of a Pattern struck in nickel for this date that we have been able to locate. A survey of the Standard Catalog of World Coins illustrates the 1880-A as a generally scarcer date in the series, with the value for choice (MS63) examples stated as multiples higher than many of the date/mintmark combinations produced during the 1870s. As a Pattern this rarity is certainly in a different league entirely, and this allure is only heightened by the exceptional preservation demonstrated by the offering, showing well-kept and lustrous surfaces, with only the presence of die polish in the fields catching the eye over what is, on the whole, an enviable example. An ideal target for the advanced collector of the German series or rare Pattern types.
