Great Britain
Kings of Mercia. Offa (757-796) "Portrait" Penny ND (c. 780-792) Fine Details (Damaged) NGC, London or Canterbury mint, Ethilwald as moneyer, Light Coinage, Portrait Floral Cross type, S-905, N-310 (VR), MEC VIII-1009. x Θ • FFA • RÆ •X• x, bare-headed bust Ea right / Єð | AL | VA | L∂, short cross batonnee over short cross in saltire; all within circle and set on a long voided cross pommee with globule in each limb. Perhaps the most iconic early English coinage, and certainly one of the most beloved portrait series of all time. Likely missing from many a collection due to the usual prohibitive rarity of the type, the piece at hand, while admittedly rough, still presents both the king's and moneyer's names with full legibility, and likely represents a more attainable example sure to fill a gap in its next owner's collection.
