Great Britain
Kings of Wessex. Aethelwulf (839-858) Penny ND (c. 843-848) XF40 ANACS, Rochester mint, Ethelhere as moneyer, Phase II Non-Portrait type, S-1046, N-607 (R). +EĐELVVLF REX, cross with wedges in angles / +EĐELHERE, cross pattee with two limbs moline. Very rare and gorgeously struck, the obverse in particular executed in an incredible relief that leaves the assigned grade feeling relatively conservative. An outlier for English hammered coinage as a whole, let alone for emissions of the 9th century, when standards of manufacture were generally quite low and coins usually come chipped and corroded.
