Kings of Wessex. Alfred the Great Penny ND (871-899) VF30 ANACS, London dies, Dudig as moneyer, Two-Line ("Guthrum") type, S-1066 (50th Edition, this coin), N-636. 1.59gm. +ÆL FR ED RE, small cross pattee within inner border / DVDIG | IIION in two lines, broken by + • +. A more attainable, yet no less appealing, type from Alfred's reign. Just the tiniest bit of unevenness and irregularity are present in the flan, which nevertheless preserves a full border on the obverse and traces of die polish on the reverse. A couple peck marks are noted, though these rather add a sense of the coin's age and use.
