Great Britain
Kings of All England. Aethelstan Penny ND (924/5-939) XF45 ANACS, Chester mint, Abba as moneyer, Circumscription Cross type, S-1093, N-672 (R), cf. CNG Auction 103, lot 1165 (same reverse die). ÆÞ'ELSTΛN RE To BRLE (S written as retrograde Z), small cross pattee / +ΛBBΛ MoIN LEGECF, small cross pattee. A wonderful rendition of this incredibly historic issue of the first King of All England. Imbued with a deep gunmetal cabinet tone, the whole of the strike, while admitting evidence of a rusty reverse die, appears laudably clear and the flan wholly without waviness. Mislabeled on the holder as a Penny of Eadmund.
Note: It is in our opinion that this coin has been slabbed with an incorrect insert. It may be sent in to ANACS for reholdering at the request of the buyer, free of charge. Please email SamS@HA.com if you would like to utilize this option.
